Unwrapping the Names of Jesus

Raise your hand if you are sooo excited for this season!! I am losing my mind because I am so ready for Christmas! We are DAYS away!

Don’t you love hearing Christmas music, putting up decorations, (I may own four Christmas trees, don’t judge me!), and seeing all the Christmas lights?

If you are the parent or a small group leader of a teen girl, I’m sure you’ve heard so much about what she has on her Christmas list. In fact, I can probably guess that most teens you know associate Christmas with presents. That is why this Christmas season is the perfect time to remind your girls of the greatest present they could receive…Jesus.

His presence in our lives IS the present.

Each December, not only am I reminded of the birth of Jesus, but the birth of my own son.

That December day that I became a mom, nothing in my life was the same. The presence of this sweet baby boy changed my life in every way. Not a day has gone by where his presence in my life was unnoticed. His birth changed my world, but the birth of Mary’s son changed THE world. FOREVER.

His presence had been written about hundreds of years before He was born. Isaiah wrote, “For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace” (Isa. 6:9).

As you meet with your girls this season, take time to “unwrap” the names of Jesus and remind them that they already have the greatest gift if they have accepted Him as their Savior.

“Unwrap” Wonderful Counselor

His presence means in this world we have someone we can trust to guide us in our daily lives. Ask your group/daughter how this name of Jesus impacts them in this season of life.

“Unwrap” Mighty God

Sometimes life hits us and we feel so weak, so small and inadequate but Jesus is mighty, strong and capable. Ask your group/daughter how this name of Jesus impacts them when they feel weak.

“Unwrap” Eternal Father

Eternal means forever—Jesus’ presence is not temporary in our lives. The presents on Christmas morning bring temporary happiness, but His presence lasts forever. Ask your group/daughter how they can be reminded that Jesus is a permanent presence in their life.

“Unwrap” Prince of Peace

Jesus’ presence brings peace. It doesn’t mean life will be easy but He does promise to help you through the hard times. Ask your group/daughter to share how they need peace right now.

“Unwrap” Immanuel

Read Isaiah 7:14. The name Immanuel means “God with us.”  Ask your group/daughter what it means to know God is with her.

We’ve only looked at just one verse today! Think about how many more verses tell us about Jesus! It truly goes to show that He is the perfect gift that the world needs.

His presence offers more than any present ever could. It offers what can’t be wrapped—joy, peace, being fulfilled, knowing you’re loved and chosen. I hope today you and your girls are reminded of the immeasurable gift that we have in Jesus.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the commercial side of Christmas, but take a moment to be consider that we already have the best gift and there’s no way it can even fit under a tree!  It’s inside you. He’s not just a book you read, a place you visit on Sunday and Wednesdays; His presence lives in your heart.
